Driver Guide

Our Driver Guides enjoy the unique opportunity to see and experience Alaska right alongside our guests. From the Driver's seat, they explore some of the worlds most magnificent and unspoiled country while bringing the story of the Great Land to life. Come, join our team of Driver Guides in one of the following exciting locations and discover what Alaska holds in store for you!

In Anchorage, Alaska's largest city, Driver Guides give a wide variety of local city tours as well as day excursions to the ski town of Girdwood and the beautiful Portage Glacier. Drivers also transport cruise guests to and from the ports of Seward and Whittier. Along the way they provide entertaining narration as they drive down one of the 10 most scenic byways in the country.

Our team of Drivers in Denali serve a dual role of both Driver Guide and Customer Sales and Service Host. In this position, drivers are responsible for meeting and greeting guests in Denali National Park who arrive by train and motorcoach. They sell and promote a wide variety of Gray Line of Alaska and Denali National Park tours as well as drive daily bus transfers to and from the train depot and area hotels.

In Fairbanks Drivers provide local tours to exciting locations like the famous Alaska Pipeline, the Riverboat Discovery and Historic Gold Dredge No. 8 where they help guests discover the thrills of panning for gold. Exceptional Drivers who complete the training program (GRID) may have the opportunity to drive and narrate 2-3 day scenic highway tours on the famed Taylor and Alaska Highways.

The historic town of Skagway is a popular port of call for many cruise lines. Drivers in Skagway give tours for cruise guests in and around local sights and attractions including scenic tours through White Pass. Exceptional Drivers who complete the training program may have the opportunity to drive and narrate 2-3 day highway tours into the Yukon Territory of Canada following in the steps of the famous gold rush of 1898.

Both Juneau and Ketchikan are major ports of call for many cruise lines so Drivers will begin and end their day with the schedule of the ships. Driver guides in Southeast Alaska will spend their time taking guests from the ships on tours to majestic glaciers, great Alaskan salmon bakes and the largest collection of totem poles in the world!

TRAINING
Our Gray Line Intelligent Driving Program (GRID) is a comprehensive, 11-week paid program where you will learn all of the skills necessary to achieve success as a Driver Guide.

Each week you will meet your trainer for two one-on-one driving sessions and every other Saturday to cover topics ranging from strategic driving to quality customer service.

GRID is designed for qualified individuals to learn how to operate a Class B commercial motor vehicle starting with the basics and finishing as a safe, competent, entertaining, and service-centered Driver Guide.

If you currently have a Class B Commercial Driver's License, your driving skills will be evaluated and depending on your experience, the training program may be shortened. This is addressed on a case-by-case basis. We require that all individuals, regardless of experience, receive basic regulatory, narration, and customer service training.

We provide the training for your Class B commercial license with guest endorsement, which is of great value long after you finish a season in Alaska! Training wages are paid at minimum wage.

WAGES & BONUSES
Hourly wage begins at $10.50 per hour, plus overtime as appropriate, which is figured at time and a half for all hours over eight (8) in a day or over 40 hours in a week.

Year-end bonus for up to 10% of wages.

Although tipping is not required, we find that many guests will offer a gratuity for exceptional service.
