McKinley Explorer Train Service Job Descriptions:
ON BOARD TRAIN POSITIONS

BEVERAGE ATTENDANT
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
To provide all beverage service in the dome and assist the Car Manager with tour narration and conversation. Must deliver superior customer service and ensure that the trip is an enjoyable, safe, and relaxed experience for our guests.
RATE OF PAY $8.50 per hour

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Thorough knowledge of how to mix and serve standard bar drinks as well as non-alcoholic beverages.
  • Prepare and track alcoholic beverages ordered by wait staff for guests in the dining room.
  • Account for all payment from the daily sales of the bar through the daily sales report. Bartender reports must balance on a daily basis.
  • Learn and become proficient with the on-board computerized point of sale system.
  • Keep record of daily inventory (both AM & PM), and requisitioning of beverages and bar supplies.
  • Maintain a record of transferred inventory with other bartenders.
  • Assist Car Manager with tour narration and conversation.
  • Maintain bar area cleanliness and organization at all times of the day.

CAR MANAGER
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
To set the tone for the guest's journey on the McKinley Explorer through factual and interesting tour narration and conversation. To serve as a leader and communicator of the on-board crew. To monitor the quality of the product and service so the trip is an enjoyable, safe, and relaxed experience for our guests.
RATE OF PAY $9.75 per hour

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide leadership and direction to onboard crew members as outlined by the company.
  • Provide factual Alaskan narration and conversation between Anchorage and Fairbanks.
  • Complete and collect administrative paperwork and deliver to the Consist Manager.
  • Learn and become proficient with the on-board computerized point of sale system.
  • Monitor mechanical functioning of the rail car in coordination with the Consist Manager.
  • Responsible for the overall cleanliness and appearance of the railcar including restrooms.
  • Responsible for customer service and product quality.
  • Assist bartender with beverages during busy time periods.

COOK
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
To ensure that all products meet our food safety, quality, and presentation standards. To provide superior customer service and ensure that the trip is an enjoyable, safe, and relaxed experience for our guests.
RATE OF PAY $9.25 per hour

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Complete knowledge of all menu items and how each item is prepared.
  • Monitor all kitchen products for quality and freshness.
  • Adhere to portion size and weight guidelines.
  • Prepare and present meals that are both pleasing to the eye and the palate.
  • Clean and detail kitchen after each meal service.
  • Ensure proper storage and preparation of food items to eliminate spoilage and waste.
  • Adhere to all company food safety and sanitation procedures.
  • Ensure that the assigned rail car set has the necessary product and supplies needed for the two-day run.
  • Greet and thank the guests while embarking or disembarking and assist with luggage.

PREP COOK
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
To pre-prepare food for later deployment to McKinley Explorer. To ensure that all products meet our food safety, quality, and presentation standards.
RATE OF PAY 
Training wage: $7.15 per hour
Regular wage: $9.25 per hour

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Complete knowledge of all menu items and how each item is prepared.
  • In accordance with the recipes and procedures set by the food and beverage manager, pre-prepare food products for the train.
  • Build and maintain established stock levels of the products assigned to you.
  • Monitor all kitchen products for quality and freshness.
  • Adhere to portion size and weight guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean and organized kitchen.
  • Complete daily reporting of productivity and stock usage.
  • Clean and store dishes.
  • Ensure proper storage and preparation of food items to eliminate spoilage and waste.
  • Adhere to all Alaska State and company food safety and sanitation procedures.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned by Management.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be 18 years of age.

  • Must be self-starting and able to work for extended periods without direct supervision.
  • Must have documented training or education in food prep and culinary arts or minimum two years experience as a cook.

DISHWASHER
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Responsible for maintaining sanitation and cleanliness of all kitchen equipment/utensils, kitchen area, and dish area on train.
RATE OF PAY $8.00 per hour

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Thorough knowledge of the proper usage of kitchen equipment including ovens, grills, refrigerators, freezers, and steam tables.
  • Knowledge of the specific products that are used in the cleaning and maintaining of kitchen equipment and utensils.
  • Assist the cooks in the preparation of food set up (i.e. washing/slicing up vegetables, etc).
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow the state of Alaska Health Code and Holland America safety department rules.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of all glasses, dishes, pots, pans, and silverware in the storage areas.
  • Keep workstations clean throughout the day including wiping down the counters, picking up garbage, and mopping floors.
  • Comfortable asking questions when unsure of how to complete a task.
  • Properly fill out and submit to the Car Manager the breakage sheet (for cups, dishes, etc) and work orders for broken equipment daily or as necessary.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Make gift shop presentations to all guests.
  • Handle and be accountable for all gift shop sales and inventory.
  • Learn and become proficient with the on board computerized point of sale system.
  • Submit daily report and deposit to Car Manager.
  • Responsible for cleanliness and appearance of all gift shop areas.
  • Beginning and end of day inventory of all gift shop items onboard the car.
  • Assist with bussing duties in the dining room during lunch and dinner.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Sell optional tours and excursions aboard the McKinley Explorer for upcoming destinations.
  • Answer questions regarding optional tours and excursions available throughout Alaska and the Yukon.
  • Answer questions regarding Holland America Line/Grayline of Alaska Cruisetours.
  • Learn and become proficient with the on-board computerized point of sale system.
  • Write tickets/vouchers for and collect payment from guests purchasing optional tours and excursions.
  • Assist Car Manager with any other duties as necessary.
  • Greet and thank the guests while embarking or disembarking and assist with luggage.
  • Learn the basics of each team member's job and be available to assist if needed.

WAIT STAFF
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Responsible for dining room operations to ensure that each guest will have a safe, memorable, elegant, and quality fine-dining experience that is reminiscent of the railroad era.
RATE OF PAY $7.15 per hour

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Thorough knowledge of all menu items and how each item is prepared.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and efficient operation of the wait station and dining room including setting up dining room for meal service, clearing and resetting tables, replacing old menus, etc.
  • Attend to any special need or request that the guest may have while dining.
  • Prepare dessert tray and present to guests in the dome car both northbound and southbound for lunch and dinner.
  • Learn and become proficient with on-board computerized point of sale system.
  • Handle and be accountable for all payments made in dining room (credit cards, cash, gratuities, vouchers, etc) and turn in daily report to the Car Manager. Wait staff reports must balance perfectly on a daily basis.
  • Be aware of and in compliance with all company policies and procedures regarding disbursement of gratuities to cooks and dishwashers, as well as personal appearance and presentation.
  • Maintain daily inventory records of dining room supplies; prepare closing inventory needs upon arrival into Anchorage.
  • Sort and consolidate all linen and bar towels at the beginning and end of each day.
  • Maintain clean dishes and polished silverware at all times - polishing once a week.

  • Interact with guests and assist with beverage service in upstairs dome area when not required in dining room or during any unforeseen delays.

CONSIST MANAGER
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Consist Manager is the ranking Holland America Line employee on board and contributes to Holland America Line's customer service mission by managing the staff, machinery, and quality controls on board each run.
RATE OF PAY $14.50 per hour

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform regular checks on staff, staff performance, and product delivery.
  • Perform tour narration audits.
  • Perform customer intercept interviews.
  • Learn and become proficient with on board computerized point of sale system.
  • Perform random cash control audits of bartenders, wait staff, train sales representatives, and gift shop employees.
  • Monitor and record as necessary mechanical data and submit this data to maintenance as directed.
  • Collect, review, and submit car maintenance write-ups to the night maintenance team.
  • Collaborate with maintenance on items to be repaired or deferred.
  • Provide direct customer service when necessary.

FACILITY BASED POSITIONS


ACCOUNTING CLERK
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
RATE OF PAY $12.00 per hour

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Audit and process daily sales report of food, beverage and sundries for the McKinley Explorer rail cars.
  • Determine total sales for each car and crew. Compute cash overages and shortages for all rail personnel and determine daily pull costs.
  • Compile sales reports and distribute to key personnel. Maintain record of all cash and credit card tips for wait personnel.
  • Respond to accounting related inquiries from other departments and/or customers.
  • Data collection and reporting as necessary (Comment cards, service assessments, etc).
  • Assist with accounting related training of new employees.
  • Work closely with Rail Manager in problem solving.
  • Other duties as assigned by Management.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Knowledge of basic accounting principles.
  • Must be comfortable with 10-key by touch.
  • Proficient computer skills and willing to learn new systems (for example, POS software, RS6000).
  • Experience in auditing or cash/sales reconciliations.
  • Be flexible, organized, and able to prioritize time/tasks.
  • Ability to work quickly, accurately and independently.

DISPATCHER
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Dispatcher contributes to Holland America Line's customer service mission by monitoring the quality of the product and service so the trip is an enjoyable, safe, and relaxed experience for our guests. Provide administrative functions for the McKinley Explorer Rail division of Holland America Line.
RATE OF PAY $14.00 per hour

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide leadership and direction to crewmembers as outlined by the company.
  • Receive train and perform regular checks on staff performance.
  • Collect and download sales and credit card machine information.
  • Address crew needs as necessary.
  • Prepare nightly arrival report.
  • Coordinate with Fairbanks Manager.
  • Prepare manifests, accessibility data, and departure grids.
  • Organize and prepare Car Manager supplies for next day service.
  • Coordinate with stocking and washing crew.
  • Prepare mail orders

Relief Supervisor requires a particularly well-rounded individual as they are expected to assist other supervisory team members in their jobs throughout the summer. FAIRBANKS RAIL SUPERVISOR
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
To ensure the smooth operation of the McKinley Explorer Rail (MEX) service by receiving the train and MEX crew each night and preparing the crew for the following day's run. Essential tasks include rooming assignments for crewmembers, janitorial oversight, miscellaneous errands/shopping, and occasional housekeeping.
RATE OF PAY $13.50 per hour

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assign hotel rooms.
  • Assist in crew transfer to/from the rail depot.
  • Meet the train each evening and assist in morning crew departure.
  • Provide financial security oversight with daily sales receipts and banks.
  • Review with Car Manager daily incident reports and audits.
  • Verify security and cleanliness of train cars at the end of the day.
  • Verify activity and performance of the janitorial crew.
  • Maintain the relationship with the housing contractor.
  • Provide support to the rail staff as necessary for the following day's run.
  • Coordinate with the Fairbanks motor coach team for rail crew transfers and vehicle maintenance.
  • Other duties as assigned by Management; generally projects and/or special event coordination.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 or more years in a direct supervisory role.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Provide administrative functions for the McKinley Explorer Rail division of Holland America Line. Oversee office management and air ticketing functions of the Anchorage Rail office.
RATE OF PAY $9.25 per hour

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Office management including supply ordering, distribution of mail/pouch/fax materials, postage machine maintenance, maintain filing/records, machine maintenance and supplies.
  • Communication with other sections of the Anchorage division (Motor Coach, Service, Safety).
  • Maintain correspondence for Management including responses to customer comments and requests for complimentary services.
  • Maintain vendor agreement/insurance program/files.
  • Assist in FAM trip requests and air ticketing/employee travel as needed.
  • Coordinate employee cruise requests for Anchorage rail division.
  • Assist in responding to RFP's and other bids for services.

RATE OF PAY $14.00 per hour

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide leadership and direction to crew members as outlined by the company.
  • Receive train and perform regular checks on staff performance.
  • Organize and manage the night stocking crew

  • Prepare nightly reports
  • Coordinate with the Maintenance team.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Manage inventory and restock food and beverage on train cars to maintain required par levels.
RATE OF PAY $8.50 per hour

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Restock food and beverage on each train car to par levels (according to inventory sheet) or as instructed.
  • Collect all inventory sheets from the train including the kitchen, wait station, and upstairs bar area.
  • Complete AM inventory of coolers, freezers, and dry storage area.
  • Collect all garbage and restock with garbage bags in kitchen, bar areas, and wait station.
  • Collect all dirty linen bags off train cars.
  • Collect all work orders and notes pertaining to broken equipment and give to the night manager.
  • Compile an order list of all items that need to be restocked before the next night.
  • Check the dishwasher list for items they may need restocked for service.
  • Check each kitchen at the end of shift to assure that all items are in proper place, clean, and ready for next day service.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned by Management.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Work experience related to stocking and inventory control.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Attention to detail and ability to keep accurate inventory records.
  • Work well with others in team environment as well as working well alone.

SEATING ASSIGNMENT CLERK
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Provide support to McKinley Explorer Operations through assigning guest names and tour groups to seats in rail cars.
RATE OF PAY $11.00 per hour

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assign guests to rail car seat numbers taking into consideration groups, families, and ADA needs
  • Coordinate with the Anchorage, Denali, and Fairbanks divisions to meet special seating requests or needs for groups riding the train.
  • Coordinate with the Access and Compliance department of Holland America Line to ensure accommodation of special needs guests.
  • Able and willing to assist with train AM deployment or PM train arrival as requested.
  • Perform research and troubleshooting for seating or railcar assignment issues which may arise in the field.
  • Other duties as assigned by Management.
