2009 Denali-Kenai Explorer, Moderate
Our “Best of Alaska” Tour

Experience the best of Alaska’s wilderness and cultural attractions by boat, glass-domed rail car, and luxury motor coach. With extra time to enjoy the wonders of Denali National Park, and a special glacier trip on our mv Ptarmigan, this unique tour gives you a taste of everything you don’t want to miss.

Day 1: Anchorage

After we transport you from the airport to your hotel, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy. Explore Alaska’s largest city or just relax. Overnight Anchorage.

Day 2: Anchorage with Portage Glacier Cruise

Start your day with a city tour of Anchorage, one of Alaska’s greatest cultural and historic hubs. Then travel to Portage Lake and board the mv Ptarmigan for a memorable cruise that takes you within 300 yards of Portage Glacier. Look for wildlife and experience the thrill of watching huge chunks of ice break away and crash into the lake on this memorable excursion. Overnight Anchorage.

Day 3: Anchorage – Denali

Journey along the base of the spectacular Alaska Range aboard the luxurious glass-domed railcars of the McKinley Explorer to Denali National Park. With double-decker railcars lined with oversized windows, you will be able to enjoy the scenery from the comfort of your seat. Watch for eagles and other wildlife along the way, and listen at your leisure to an informative audio narration as the train approaches key points throughout your journey. Feast on gourmet meals in the lower level dining room, and feel free to ask your car manager any questions you might have as you wind your way to Denali National Park and prepare for your next adventure. Overnight Denali.

Day 4: Denali

Venture into Denali National Park on the Natural History Tour in Search of the “Big Four:” moose, caribou, bear, and Dall sheep. You might possibly even catch sight of Mt. McKinley’s snowcapped majesty on your journey! The remainder of the day participate in a variety of complimentary park activities, or supplement your time by choosing from a variety of optional tours we offer such as whitewater rafting, flightseeing, horseback excursions, or self-drive Jeep tours. Today is your day to personalize your experience. We strive to help you enjoy the splendor of Denali National Park in a way that is best suited for you. May we suggest ending your evening with our Cabin Nite Dinner Theater? Dine on family-style platters of salmon and ribs as you enjoy an entertaining and historical show; a perfect end to a day in Denali. Overnight Denali.

Day 5: Denali – Seward

This morning embark on a scenic journey via deluxe motor coach to the port town of Seward on the Kenai Peninsula. You will quickly see that Seward is more than just a pretty town. Rich in seafaring cultural identity and marine wildlife, Seward has long been a historically fascinating city, and is a gateway to the spectacular Kenai Fjords National Park. This evening you are free to explore this picturesque park of Alaska’s south-central region on your own. Keep an eye out for porpoises, seabirds and other wildlife! Overnight Seward.

Day 6: Seward – Anchorage

Your morning is free for you to explore on your own or just relax in Seward. Afterward, you’ll cruise along the rugged Kenai Peninsula viewing rocky coastlines and glacier-crowned peaks. A light lunch is included. Porpoises, puffins, sea otters, whales and dozens of seabird species make their home in Kenai Fjords National Park.
