Seattle, Wash. – Gray Line of Alaska is taking fans of the legendary Iditarod race on a unique tour that includes watching hundreds of sled dogs howl with excitement and strain against their harnesses as they start the 1,150-mile trek north from Anchorage to Nome.
The annual race commemorates the heroic effort by intrepid dog mushers and their hard-driving dogs to save Nome residents from a diphtheria epidemic in 1925. Leaving from Nenana, 250 miles north of Anchorage, the drivers and dogs relayed life-saving serum 674 miles to Nome in five days, seven hours. Today, the longer race takes 10 to 17 days with all teams going the entire distance.

six-day, five-night Iditarod tour will mingle with event organizers and locals as guests at the gala Musher’s Ball. They will be in downtown Anchorage for the ceremonial start of the race as well as the official start in nearby Wasilla the next day. In addition, they’ll visit spectacular Alyeska Resort, the Anchorage Museum, the world’s largest floatplane base at Lake Hood, Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, Portage Glacier Lake and other local attractions.
The Feb. 27 to March 3 tour begins and ends in Anchorage. Cost is $665 per person double occupancy and includes transfers, accommodations and day tours.
