Web Special! 2008 Denali Explorer, Deluxe
Between Anchorage and Fairbanks stands majestic Mt. McKinley. Still called Denali — the Great One — by Alaska natives and locals, Mt. McKinley is not only the tallest mountain in North America, it's also the most spectacular. Denali's the center point of a six-million-acre wilderness that boasts some of the most unspoiled, untamed country in the world. This 6 day/5 night itinerary includes a memorable train journey, the Natural History Tour that takes you into the park for unforgettable mountain and wildlife viewing, and your choice of optional adventures.

Day 1: Anchorage

We'll greet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. Overnight Anchorage.

Day 2: Anchorage with Portage Glacier

Tour Anchorage, then travel to Portage Lake along the scenic Seward Highway. You can browse the glaciology exhibits at the informative Begich-Boggs Visitor Center before you board the exclusive mv Ptarmigan day boat. Built to navigate the iceberg-dotted waters of Portage Lake and to safely cruise within 300 yards of Portage Glacier, you'll enjoy the informative onboard narration that describes the forces of nature that are at work all around you. Return to Anchorage for another night's stay.

Day 3: Anchorage – Denali

Journey between the mountains of the spectacular Alaska and Talkeetna ranges on an incomparable sightseeing experience aboard the McKinley Explorer railcars. Luxurious glass-domed observation cars carry you along the rails of the historic Alaska Railroad.

Take in the wide-open scenery as you travel through the Matanuska Valley, a farming region known for mammoth vegetables; past colorful towns like Wasilla, billed as the "Home of the Iditarod;" along scenic rivers like the Susitna, which means "Mother River;" and across Hurricane Gulch, where the train slows to 5 miles per hour to cross over the trestle built over the creek 296 feet below! From the depot, you'll be transferred to your accommodations for an overnight stay near the entrance of magnificent Denali National Park.

Day 4: Denali National Park

This morning, get a deeper understanding of one of North America's most remarkable national parks on the Natural History Tour! Explore the vastness of Denali's taiga forest and expansive rolling tundra. You'll marvel at the awesome beauty and hear colorful stories about the area's cultural and geological history.

The evening is yours to spend as you choose. There are park-sponsored activities including Ranger-led hikes and thrilling optional Denali tours including white-water rafting, fixed-wing flightseeing and guided horseback riding. Tonight, the optional Cabin Nite Dinner Theater is the perfect way to top off an eventful day in the Denali wilderness. Overnight Denali.

Day 5: Denali – Fairbanks

Take time this morning to indulge in more of Denali's wild charm. Later, re-board the train and travel deeper into Alaska's lovely interior. This portion of the route includes many scenic highlights including the town of Nenana, where Nenana Ice Classic competitors attempt to predict the date of ice breakup on the river; and the Mears Memorial Bridge, which is one of the largest single span railroad bridges in the United States.

When you reach Fairbanks, you'll be met at the depot and transferred to your hotel for an overnight stay in Alaska's second largest city.

Day 6: Fairbanks

Tour Alaska's "Golden Heart City" and make a stop at the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Next, you're off to the fully restored Gold Dredge No. 8 to learn how it worked, pan for gold and enjoy a hearty miner's lunch. Overnight Fairbanks.

Day 7: Fairbanks

Your tour ends with a transfer from your hotel to the airport.
