Denali National Park Explorer - Southbound - 3MS Itinerary

Explore Alaska on this unforgettable adventure that originates in the Golden Heart City of Fairbanks and takes you through Alaska’s ruggedly beautiful interior by train to Denali National Park and the city of Anchorage. With ample time to explore some of the six million acres of wilderness in Denali, you will have the opportunity to take part in activities such as ATV adventures and fly-fishing tours. Enjoy dinner and a show at the Music of Denali Dinner Theater at McKinley Chalet Resort featuring family-style dining and a spirited original musical about the first men to reach the summit of Denali. You will explore the park on a guided tour and have a chance to see some of the park’s wildlife including bears, moose, caribou and wolves. The tour ends in the state’s largest city of Anchorage where you will take a day trip to Portage Lake and cruise within 300 yards of the actively calving Portage Glacier. Culture, adventure and wilderness await you on this tour that showcases Alaska’s majestic beauty.

Available during check-out:
Upgrade your rail experience from Fairbanks to Denali for $100 per person. The standard tour features Alaska Railroad’s Adventure Class for this rail component of the tour. When you choose the upgrade, you will travel aboard Alaska Railroad's GoldStar service instead.  Adventure Class railcars do not feature a dome and meals are available for purchase.  GoldStar service is aboard Alaska Railroad’s domed railcars and breakfast aboard the train is included.  

With the standard option, rail travel from Denali to Anchorage is aboard our own luxury, glass-domed rail service (meals not included, but available for purchase) and the upgrade applies only to the portion of the trip from Fairbanks to Denali.


Unless noted, tour is not escorted and does not include meals, sightseeing or home city air.

Day 1: Fairbanks

Overnight: Fairbanks

We’ll greet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. Overnight in Fairbanks.

Day 2: Fairbanks - Denali

Departs From: Fairbanks, 8:15 AM (Train Departs Fairbanks Depot)
Arrives At: Denali, 12:10 PM (Train Arrives Denali Depot)

Transfer to the Fairbanks train depot where you will board the historic Alaska Railroad and travel south to Denali National Park, where you will arrive around noon. Spend the afternoon exploring the area and be sure to visit the tour desk to find out what optional activities are available. Overnight Denali-area hotel.

Day 3: Denali

Overnight: Denali

Immerse yourself in the six-million-acre wilderness of Denali National Park on a guided tour. Keep your eyes peeled for Denali’s “Big Five” – Dall sheep, caribou, grizzly bears, moose and wolves. Bring along binoculars to spot distant animals and have your camera ready. This evening, enjoy an unforgettable dinner experience at Music of Denali Dinner Theater at McKinley Chalet Resort. Overnight at a Denali-area hotel. (S, D)

Day 4: Denali - Anchorage

Departs From: Denali, 9:15 AM (Train Departs Denali Depot)
Arrives At: Anchorage, 5:15 PM (Train Arrives Anchorage Depot)

Embark on your luxurious rail journey to Anchorage. Keep an eye out for mountain and wildlife sightings along the way. Enjoy the evening to spend as you please. Overnight Anchorage hotel.

Day 5: Anchorage

Departs From: Anchorage
Arrives At: Anchorage

Explore Anchorage in the morning, then travel to Portage Lake for the Portage Glacier Cruise and the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in the afternoon. Overnight Anchorage hotel.

Day 6: Anchorage

Spend your last morning in Anchorage strolling on the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail or enjoying a hearty breakfast at one of the popular downtown eateries. Later, transfer to the airport where you will end your Alaska vacation.
